Hitchens on Galloway: How Have the Unmighty Fallen

I guess this puts things in perspective:

A member of the British Parliament was in receipt of serious money originating from a homicidal dictatorship. That money was supposed to have been used to ameliorate the suffering of Iraqis living under sanctions. It was instead diverted to the purposes of enriching Saddam’s toadies and of helping them propagandize in favor of the regime whose crimes and aggressions had necessitated the sanctions and created the suffering in the first place. This is something more than mere “corruption.” It is the cynical theft of food and medicine from the desperate to pay for the palaces of a psychopath.

I anticipate a very hard week or two for Republicans…as you’ve surely noticed by now, I’m pretty heavily convinced (but I still hope I’m wrong!) that Libby is about to get indicted, and possibly Rove (and maybe even others, though no one higher). Still, I will take some small comfort in knowing that no one, Democrat or Republican, who has ever held public office in these great United States – no, not even Richard Nixon – has descended to the levels where Galloway dwells. If I were George (and thank God I’m not), I might tone down the bluster a wee bit and hope this thing goes away…
